| Kaylyn was sitting in the library doing some research about a spell she was wanting to perform and substitutes to make it ‘Shilling Lane safe,’ while keeping it as pure as possible. She didn’t really notice anything that was going on around her between her reading and note taking, but she was hardly surprised to see someone else there as she cleared her books and gathered her personal items to leave. She recognized the woman but did not know her name, she like most everyone at Shilling Lane kept to herself, but for once Kae was feeling a little adventurous and decided to introduce herself. Kae walked towards the woman and placed her notebooks and pencils on a table a shorts ways away from the woman as not to offend her, then she herself walked up and greeted her in the most nonthreatening way she could think of. “Hi, I’m Kaylyn.”

| Atia had been sitting at a table in the library, her journal open in front of her, as she poured her heart out. She had been having the most awful week and it was only Wednesday. After her fight with that other patient on Monday, she was placed in solitary confinement until she calmed down. It had been a while since her last trip to solitary confinement, she had been on her best behavior. What was it about that blonde woman that enraged her so? She just couldn't put her finger on it.
As she scribbled furiously, she heard someone place some things on the desk she was sitting at. Atia looked up to see another patient, someone she had seen many times before, but didn't have a name. “Hi, I’m Kaylyn.” the woman greeted. Atia stared at her for a moment. What the hell did she want? "Atia..." she responded, setting her pen down and closing her journal. "Charmed... Is there something I can do for you...?" She was rather curious as what this woman wanted from her. Most of her fellow female patients had witnessed the fight and had since avoided her.

| Kaylyn hadn’t noticed before that the Atia had been writing in her journal, “Sorry, I hadn’t noticed that you were busy,” was the first thing she could think of as a result. After a moment she realized that she had been asked a question, “Not necessarily something you can do, I was just feeling social, and you looked lonely.” She knew that she wasn’t treading as carefully as she normally would, but there was just something about the moment that changed that and she couldn’t stop herself. “But if you’d rather be left alone I’ll not keep you.” She offered Atia an out, not wanting to get into anything, or trigger any personality. | |

| Atia shrugged off the woman's apology. "It's okay, I guess," she said softly. "Feeling social, huh? ...Lonely..." The words felt strange on her lips. She had no friends in this place and her family, well, her parents, were ashamed of her. She had no idea how her brother and twin felt about her crimes. It had been a while since she had received any letter from any of them. “But if you’d rather be left alone I’ll not keep you.” Kaylyn said. Atia shook her head and gestured to the seat across from her. "It's fine... Contrary to popular belief, I don't attack everyone who approaches me," she said, a small smile crossing her features. "So... What are you doing here? Since you know I was journaling..." | |

| Kaylyn gave the slightest of smiles when Atia accepted her apology. She heard her mumble to herself but decided not to say anything about it since it seemed counterproductive. Kaylyn took the seat offered to her and brought her things to rest in front of her and to the side. Kaylyn furrowed her brow when Atia made a comment about attacking people, she had heard about a fight in the commons a few days prior but hadn’t heard who had been involved. “That was you,” she asked surprised. “I was just doing some research,” she answered vaguely. She’d had plenty of bad experiences with telling people about her beliefs and wanted to be careful before blurting it out. | |

| “That was you?” The question sounded surprised, but it made her anger prickle lightly; apparently Kaylyn hadn't been present for the fight. This fact comforted Atia's thoughts and quelled her anger. Kaylyn's response to her question sounded vague, guarded, as if she was keeping secrets. "Research on what?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Atia lived by the phrase "Curiosity may have killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." | |

| Kaylyn’s stomach sunk when Atia asked further about her research. She should have expected it but she hadn’t and now she was unsure how to approach the situation. After a moment of thought she asked, “Before I answer your question may I ask you one of my own?” Kaylyn pleaded with the Goddess that Atia allow her the question while she waited for her response. Kaylyn glanced at her notebooks and said another prayer that Atia not grab for them to quell her own curiosity. | |

| “Before I answer your question may I ask you one of my own?” Kaylyn asked her. Atia leaned back in her chair and counted to ten slowly in her head. Was whatever she was researching that bad? Atia couldn't fathom Shilling Lane carried anything containing dangerous information, so she didn't understand what was so difficult. It was a simple question that required a simple answer, why was this girl making it so difficult. "I guess," she said after a minute or so of counting to herself. Better calm than in trouble again.

| Kaylyn was aware that her request had been odd but hadn’t expected that it would take over a minute for a response. She let out an internal sigh when Atia finally answered and asked, “What are your views on polytheistic religion?” It was the most benign phrase that she could think of to describe her beliefs, and what she hoped would cause the least amount of uproar if there were any. She waited for a response quietly and hoped that her question didn’t upset Atia at all. | |

| Kaylyn's question caused Atia to raise her eyebrow. Polytheistic religion? That's what she was researching? Alright, baller, but why the ridiculous amount of secrecy? "It's nobody's business but your own when it comes to religion," she said. "Don't shove your beliefs down my throat and I won't shove mine down yours... However, there's nothing wrong with having a decent discussion about it, so long as no one gets butthurt." Atia was still counting in her head; talking about sensitive issues bothered her greatly because she didn't like to cause fights if she could help it. | |

| Atia’s response caused Kaylyn to smile she hadn’t known what to expect but was glad to get an indifferent response. Kaylyn crossed her legs and sat back in her seat finally feeling as though she could relax. “I was actually researching spells and ways to perform them here without causing too much of a stir,” she explained. “I’m sorry if I’ve upset you at all, it’s just that I’ve had a lot of people react negatively to it in the past and I try to avoid telling new people if I can.” | |

| The woman across from her smiled and seemed to relax a bit more as she sat back in her chair and crossed her legs. “I was actually researching spells and ways to perform them here without causing too much of a stir,” Kaylyn said, explaining herself further. She then apologized to Atia and Atia held up her hand to stop her.
"Stop. There's no need to apologize for this. I'm not upset, I'm just... counting..." she trailed off, unsure of what else to say on the matter. "So why would you want to work magic in a place as poisonous as this?"

| Atia had cut off her first apology and Kaylyn, “I…” cut herself off before she could say a second, since she knew it would do no good and would probably make it worse. Counting she said to herself mentally I used to do that when I was upset as a kid, but she decided not to say anything out loud. Kaylyn accepted that Atia didn’t have a problem with her beliefs but was still a bit hesitant to explain herself further. After a moment of debate with herself she determined that there was no reason not to tell Atia. “I’m Wiccan and Beltane is coming up and I was wanting to celebrate. Its been a few years so I needed to brush up a bit.”

| “I’m Wiccan and Beltane is coming up and I was wanting to celebrate. Its been a few years so I needed to brush up a bit,” Kaylyn said, throwing Atia for a loop. Beltane? What the hell was that? A holiday? Curious, she tilted her head. "What's Beltane?" she asked, her voice full of curiosity, the thought of counting out of her head. "Is that like a holiday or something?" | |

| Kae smiled in amusement at Atia’s curiosity. “Yes it’s a holiday, it more commonly known as May Day,” she explained, “Way back when it marked the beginning of the planting season and celebrated the fertility of the earth.” Kaylyn couldn’t think of much more to say, since she hadn’t been asked any more questions nor could she think of anything to ask Atia so she waited for any comments or questions that Atia may have for what she had just said. | |

| Atia took the woman's words in stride, nodding her head in understanding. Wracking her brains for any useful knowledge she had, Atia recalled that a young girl she went to high school with was Wiccan, though she couldn't remember anything more than Wiccan's worshiped the forces of nature and a mother goddess who cares for all.
"So, how many holidays do you celebrate?" she asked curiously. "Beltane is just one of them, right? There was this girl in high school that was a Wiccan and she was always throwing these parties to celebrate her holidays and stuff." Atia could remember receiving a few invitations, but only ever attended the Halloween party because her parents disagreed with her beliefs.

| Kaylyn answered both questions at once, “Beltane is one of eight major holidays, four of which take place on the changing of the seasons and the other four fall halfway between the first. I haven’t held a formal celebration since I was admitted, except for Samhain, but even that’s been so dulled down it doesn’t feel like a celebration.” She didn’t comment about the girl Atia had attended high school with, it wasn’t uncommon for high schoolers to explore themselves and Wicca for many was a way to rebel against their parents and there are plenty who are serious and she didn’t want to assume one way or the other. | |

| Atia nodded thoughtfully as Kaylyn spoke. "Bet it's been dumbed down for 'security' reasons," she said snarkily. She thought all of the security measures were ridiculous, but then again, if it weren't for those measures, she was sure she would have hurt someone by now in a rage. "Tell me about the other holidays," she said, leaning in, placing her hands on her journal. The conversation had her genuinely interested in what the young woman had to say. She couldn't say the same for very many people in this loony bin. | |
